Northamptonshire based Auden has announced the launch of two new ranges of guitars which are designed to make the brand more accessible and help the company reach a wider audience.

The ‘Players Choice’ range consists of new versions of three established Auden models, Colton, Bowman and Julia. These guitars feature solid gloss Spruce tops combined with open pore Sapele back and sides and understated, classic lines. Each guitar comes with a luxury Auden gig bag and will retail at £499.

The ‘Neo’ range again revisits three Auden favourites – the Colton, Chester and Marlow, this time pairing solid, natural finished AA grade Cedar tops with solid, open pore Mahogany back and sides. The natural appearance of the guitars is enhanced with solid Maple binding that continues from the body all the way up the neck. The Neo range of guitars come fitted with the Schertler Lydia Vol system and are supplied with a luxury Auden gig bag. The retail price of the Neo range is £799.

Auden Guitars purchase Gordon Smith Guitars

Auden Guitars have announced the acquisition of the Gordon Smith guitar company.

With their brand new 3,000 sq ft workshop, Auden Guitars have the space and capability to ensure that all new Gordon Smith solid bodied and semi acoustic electric guitars are built with handpicked tonewoods and high quality hardware, whilst retaining the cosmetic personality and sonic characteristics of these legendary models within the GSG range, including the iconic GS1, Gypsy and Gemini.

Established in the early 1970’s Gordon Smith Guitars is one of the longest running contemporary guitar makers in England. When previous owners John and Linda Smith decided to retire, the question was who would continue with the company’s longstanding legacy?

“I’m delighted with this move”, Auden Guitars’ managing director Doug Sparkes comments,

“Gordon Smith Guitars will continue to have a stand alone identity within the Auden family and they will continue to be 100% handcrafted in the UK. Auden has quickly established a reputation for great build quality and for using the best materials available – this ethos extends to Gordon Smith Guitars as well. Our team of highly skilled luthiers will focus on construction, tone and playability across the range of traditional body shapes that an army of Gordon Smith fans still adore.

It’s thanks to so many loyal Gordon Smith players that these guitars have survived decades of fashions and trends within the music industry. Gordon Smith guitars are adaptable to any musical genre and our challenge now is to protect the values of the brand whilst attracting the next generation of Gordon Smith players.

Whilst maintaining a strong direct relationship with players and owners, our plan is to build relationships with a handful of key retailers across the UK, where custom guitars can be specified alongside a stock range of Gordon Smith Guitars.”

John Smith comments, “We are now well into the hand-over period, and working in detail with Auden and their team of luthiers to acquaint them with the GSG processes. I’m feeling good, its ducks to water as they say.

I’m sure that GSG – the second generation to paraphrase, won’t just be something…..                   …..it’ll be something else!”

We’ve had a few reviews of our guitars published recently, including a glowing review of the Auden Edgar and Marlow guitars in the March issue of Acoustic magazine. That review is now live online to read if you missed the magazine.  Guy Little puts both the guitars through their paces and is incredibly enthusiastic about them.

…the Marlow is a charming, lively and engaging little parlour that lives for snappy riffs, delicate fingerstyle passages and smokey blues licks. It’s addictive beyond description and a complete joy to play. Then you have the Edgar – a true gentle giant with a hulking frame but a versatile, sonorous voice that is enthrallingly beautiful with the potential to change your guitar playing forever. There’s nothing quite like playing a good baritone and if you’re tempted then you really ought to give the Edgar a try.

Earlier in the year, Dave Foster reviewed the Chester Cutaway on his blog Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Dave was equally impressed in his review,

…the gorgeous Indian rosewood back and sides give the guitar an unusually extended sonic spectrum both in the lows and the highs, more so that I’m used to from Mahogany or the walnut on my Taylor and the spruce top gives it a top end sparkle which sounds truly fantastic in conjunction with the Indian rosewood. The whole guitar has a resonant vibe to it that escapes so many other acoustic guitars.

Our dealer network is growing all the time, should you wish to try an Auden or pop in to Auden HQ in Higham Ferrers to try the whole range. Call first though on 01933 391234 so we can make sure everything is perfect for your visit.

Where possible we’ve collected reviews of our guitars and publish them here on the site in the media section which you can download and read later.

Ex Show stock being sold off… but be quick

We are busy in the workshop putting the final touches to our 2015 range of show guitars.  These will travel with us from The Great British Guitar Show, through Frankfurt, the Northern Guitar Shows and LAGS etc… which means it’s time to retire our 2014 set.

That means there are some real bargains available.  All these guitars have been back through the workshop, refinished, set up and re-strung.  Some have a few scars from their journey but all come with the full Auden lifetime warranty.

If you’re interested in a real bargain Auden then contact us quickly as these guitars won’t hang around long.

We’re all set for a busy weekend later this month (February 21st & 22nd) as Auden owners from all over the UK descend on Auden HQ to record two days of ‘showroom’ sessions. The sessions are being filmed and will be published via the Auden YouTube channel over the coming months as well as being available on the Auden website and through the artists own media.

The weekend promises to cover a wide spectrum of styles including acoustic blues, country, folk and jazz.

There are still a few slots available and booking can be made by calling 01933 391234 or emailing doug@audenguitars.com

Auden founder Doug Sparkes commented “Auden guitars have got into the hands of some incredibly talented people over the last 12 months and this weekend is an opportunity to showcase this talent and demonstrate to other musicians the great results that are possible with an Auden guitar.

We know that there a lot of Auden owners in the North of the UK that may find it hard to get to this event so we are looking at repeating it later in the year somewhere around the Scottish Borders.”

As you grow up there comes a time to leave home and that’s exactly what’s happening to Auden Guitars following an agreement to purchase of the old Co-Operative building in Lancaster Street, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire.

The building dates back to 1924 when it was opened as a Co-Op Grocery store and butchery. More recently it has been used by a local printing company and has fallen into some disrepair. Auden will now start the process of returning the fabric of the building to its former glory while establishing a showroom, sound room, finishing workshop and offices within the 3000 square foot space. The ownership of the building will transfer to Auden from the start of September and the refit will take approximately 3 months. If all goes to plan then Auden will start to trade from the new premises from the beginning of 2014.

Auden is proud to announce a new partnership with the Trees for Cities charity.

Trees for Cities is an independent charity set up in 1993. It works with urban communities to plant trees in deprived parts of our cities to grow stronger neighbourhoods, enhance urban landscapes and improve people’s health and happiness.

Their work focuses on areas of social and economical deprivation bringing together local communities to work on practical greening and educational projects in urban spaces. The work of Trees for Cities places a special emphasis on the involvement of local people and especially disadvantaged people who often suffer barriers to participation and are disengaged from their local environment.

Trees for Cities currently deliver projects within the UK in cities such as London, Reading, Birmingham, Nottingham, Peterborough, Sheffield and Bradford and also overseas in Nairobi, Addis Ababa, La paz and Ica.

Auden Guitars has agreed to fund a tree, it’s planting, first year maintenance and community involvement for every guitar sold. A unique, prototype Auden guitar has also been donated to the charity to be auctioned as part of the Trees for Cities Christmas 2013 auction.

Commenting on the new partnership Auden director Doug Sparkes said ‘There is no escaping the fact that guitars are made of wood and wood comes from trees. As a principal, cutting down trees is not a good idea so we wanted to do something to try and redress the balance. Working with Trees for Cities enables us to do that in a structure that also does great work in some of the most challenging communities across the UK’.

This year Trees for Cities are celebrating their 20th anniversary.
